Ground Zeroes should just be considered a part of MGS5. Knowing more about Metal Gear and MGS1 also helps, since there are loose threads trying to tie MGS5 to these titles to complete the timeline. So you will want to know as much as you can about MGS3 and Peacewalker to get the most out of MGS5. I think their contribution is minimal enough that you don't miss much if you at least take some time to read up on their plot.ДЄs for MGS5 specifically, it often references characters and events from the games that come before it in the timeline. Metal Gear 1 & 2 on the NES/MSX don't add too much to the overall universe, but are what MGS5 is attempting (and failing) to connect to, and are referenced often enough in MGS games. Worth looking at but I don't think it's required reading let alone playing.ДЄc!d 1 & 2 are non-canon, and are set after the events of MGS4 (which makes no sense in the continuity). Doesn't add a whole lot to the main overarching plots.

Portable Ops is partial canon, and would be before Peace Walker. Great game to play either way, though it is an entirely different genre. If you want to include spin offs, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance would be at the very end following Raiden from MGS2 and MGS4 after the events of MGS4.

If you want to include the MSX/NES Metal Gear games, they would be before MGS1.

You could also play the games in chronological order. You can skip Ac!d 1 and 2, Revengence, and Portable Ops as they are either not cannon or not relevant to the story of Metal Gear (though all of them are very good and worth playing if you choose)ДЄvoid Metal Gear Survive. Start with Metal Gear 1 and 2, through the Metal Gear Solid games and work your way to Metal Gear Solid 5. The timeline in the games doesn't matter - they were released in the optimal way needed to understand them, even if the timelines jump around a bunch.
